Research Programs...
The Institute generally has between four and six major research efforts going at any given time. Typically three are directed research programs and the remaining are infrastructure projects, joint projects with other institutions, or organizational efforts for conferences or summer schools. A normal research program produces one report every two years using one-quarter to one-half of a full-time senior scientist. Historically, our plasma physics, fluid dynamics and supercomputing programs have been our largest programs, but we expect the quantum computing and biophysics (currently an IR&D component) programs to grow significantly in the near future.

Research programs receive their charter from the Program Committee of the Board of Directors and are managed by an Institute Affiliate, a senior staff scientist. Programs are dynamic objects, created based the level of current and anticipated activity at the Institute, and can be deactivated when activity falls off. The Insitute has a standing IR&D Program that is home to sporadic and low-level research activity that does not fall within the bounds of our designated programs. We also have infrastructure programs which develop technology used to carry out our other research programs. They involve building something, like our Supercomputing Center or our web-based data analysis and mining tools.

We publish our research results in refereed scientific journals, conference proceedings, IAP Reports, as well as books and monographs.

Our current research programs are listed at the left with links to high-level technical summaries of recent activities. These summaries show the Institute's leading position in these fields and the novel approaches and benefits our work brings. We are very proud of our work in these areas and they demonstrate the excellence in research that is the primary goal of the Institute.
